The land was wide and open, with hills and boulders, and clumps of trees scattering the land. A lone wolf trotted across a stream, the water splashing up onto the pale underside of his black and white coat. He paused on the opposite side, shaking to rid himself of the wetness, then continuing on his way, occasionally sniffing trees and the ground in search of scent markers. He had passed herds of prey, and he was baffled as to why he had smelled the presence of no other wolves for at least twenty miles. Perhaps this was the territory he had been searching for for so long.
Vilkas, was the wolf's name, a tall male from much farther north, with the distinctive facial marking that looked like a white mask and black-ringed eyes. He picked up his pace to an easy-going lope, his long legs eating up the distance in no time as he climbed to the top of the ridge to survey the surrounding land. He could see the mountains to his left, and the beginnings of a lake in the east, with the river he had been following leading into it. This land would do well. There was enough water, there was plenty of deer and other grazing animals to feed a pack, and there seemed to be shelter if he looked for it. There was a cave in the hillside a few miles back, in the direction of the mountains, that he had passed yesterday, that seemed large enough to be a comfortable den, although he would need to investigate more.
Yes, his pack would begin here. He would find a mate, and other wolves, and they would form a new life right where he stood. But he would need the blessings of the goddess to make it as Alpha. He prayed that Ebona would look favorably upon him, and believe that he was as suitable for the job as he believed himself to be. He lifted his nose to the sky, his front paws planted on the top of a stone, and howled to the night sky, his white face shining pale in the moonlight. He was unsure of what would happen next, but he looked forward to it.
